La Couvertoirade was a stronghold of the Knights Templar society from around the
12th to the 14th Century
The grave markers in the small cemetery must be between 500 to 650 years
old. Incredible. The two sweet collie dogs (mother and son) appeared
silently and were affectionate and friendly. They wander around the
village and someone does take care of them.
The entire place was virtually deserted because the season does not
begin until 30 March and continues for six months. No restaurants and
only one small artisan shop open. I found it very odd and rather
uncomfortable being one of the few people around. Hardly anyone appears
to live in this fortified village year round. The history is amazing.
